christmas
and this xmas eve,i found something that i thought was lost in time and never to return to me again.
it's innocence.
as usual, the traditional family xmas dinner at my aunt's.roast turkey and stuffing, cream of mushroom,my granny's super coleslaw, giant sausages, caesar's salad, shepard's pie, mashed potato, pasta with bacon n mushrooms.how's that for a menu?it's something i look forward to every year, the annual feasting of the Seah family.sitting together, making fun of each other, the "pass me the salad, pass me the ketchup" and my 3rd uncle poking fun at my granny.
this year,my 3 little devils of cousins decided to play with me.Keefe and I had a dinosaur war.Megan and Faith gave me a good massage which later developed into a pounding.their masak-masak game had me as the customer and resulted in the 2 of them quarreling due to difference in management styles.and Keefe was licking the walls.and i had to shove his tongue back in place before it does more damage to him than to the walls.he was already having diarrhea from putting his tongue to everything in sight.
it was unbelievably tiring to tackle these 3 little rascals.but it was very very fun.and when i had to leave for my class gathering,Faith said something i never heard anyone say to me before.
"Guangxing gor-gor,can i hug you?"
wow,heart-melting moment.
and so me and the 3 angels embraced in a group hug and Faith gave me a little kiss on the cheek.
it's been so many years since anyone did so.haha, and i wouldn't mind if it came from my cheeky little cousin.
and Megan looked so disappointed when i had to leave cos she wanted to pass me the present they got for me,which she did when i was forced to stay for the gift exchange ceremony.
And Keefe,as always, sensed the opportunity to go gai-gai and bawled when he was pulled back before he could wear his shoes.heart-wrenching to see him cry when for the past hour, all i saw was his handsome grin.
looks like i sealed my place in the 3 kids' hearts.haha.and it sure made me a happy cousin.

zoo part 2
2 cheetahs lazing in the shade.weren't moving around much.
i ran quite a distance to get this shot cos the ostriches refused to move to the front when i was trying to snap them earlier.i'd prefer ostrich to turkey anyday.their meat is real tender.big guy here's called the greater kudu.some kinda antelope.sure is a beauty.and these two little fellows are meerkats.they're keeping a lookout for their other tribemates.funny-looking animals.but very cute nonetheless. small rhino facing off with big rhino.the praying mantis trying to stop the car with its arms.bu4 zhi1 liang4 li4. the small one finally scampered off to safety behind another much bigger rhino.this action is called gang-behaviour.small-time gangster meets hero and harm4 ji4.he go and find his boss ask him protect him.
giraffes have tongues that grow up to 52cm.can you imagine french-kissing one?like a snake got into your mouth. white-handed gibbon taking a drink.he and the other female were swinging through the trees playing tag.quite a sight to behold. female gibbon was a damn smart one.as i held out my handphone to take the shot, she was bobbing her head up and down like she knew i was taking photos.and as i walked around the enclosure her gaze was following me.think she likes me.
this red-ruffed lemur gave me one of the biggest scare of my life.initially i saw it emerge from the forest and climb onto the roof of a sheltered walkway.i thought it disappeared and hung around for a while longer cos i wanted to take a shot of it.then as i turned to leave,i was looking at my phone for the time and when my head's up,this cheeky fellow was on the floor staring at me barely a meter away.i froze but my hand was ready to take a picutre of this cheeky fellow.but it ran to where it is in the picture and i chased after it.that's how this pic came about.cool.
this is Inuka, the first polar bear born in captivity in the tropics.look how much it has grown.i remember i was only around 11 when it was born.and it's got a obsessive compulsive disorder.this was taken during the feeding time show.before that, when i was at the polar bear enclosure,it was just pacing around its den.round and round and round.i gave up trying to take a picture and left.
i've got a lot more pictures but it's kinda tiring to put everything online.so i selected a few which i like more than the rest for my pathetic audience of maybe 3 or 4.
i've got 3 shots of free-ranging peacocks.this looks the best.sure is a cocky fellow.stood so close to it i reckoned it'd peck me if i went nearer, but it just posed
for me.another picture has it crossing the road.who says only chickens do that?
this is the common marmoset.found it in the reptile garden with the iguana.i was so close to it thanks to 3 ah bengs in black who were feeding it god-knows-what.quite funny leh,ah beng go zoo, never tell them this one not botanical gardens don't have ah lian ah huay.
this red-eared terrapin was tanning and so i happily made it a model.my fav photo of the day.
so you have it.my trip to the Singapore Zoological Gardens.
some don't know how important it is to stop harming animals.some refuse to do anything to help in the conservation of endangered species.global warming, excessive logging, poaching and pollution are just one of many reasons why there are species becoming extinct everyday.care for them.you'll get bored of humans when that's all that's left.
anyway there's Ben & Jerry's scoop shop there.had the choc chip cookie dough.superb!and there are cute girls manning it.hmm...maybe i'll go for one more these days....
Save the animals!Support the World Wildlife Fund!PETA rocks!
Zoo part 1
find the siamang.quite hard to spot.
some ass-sniffing greater mousedeers.
this binturong moved only because the keepers cleaning the enclosure woke it up
the asian small-clawed otter.one of my fav animals.sleek and handsome.
what can i say....the majestic white Bengal Tiger.i was so in awe of their size and magnificence that i spent a good 10 minutes staring at them.love tigers.
the supposed ballerina of the river.the pygmy hippo.i'd say a very fat and clumsy one,and needless to say, ugly.
the hamadryas baboons.they're gathered together only because the crowd is throwing them pieces of banana and oranges.check out that baboon standing on the left.it was hopping frantically trying to get some attention.soon,it was outdone by a female.she was somersaulting.
the golden-lion tamarin.i'm sorry you can only catch a glimpse of its head because they simply refused to get out of their cage.once, they were free-ranging in the zoo until some fuckers caught and smuggled them out of the zoo.at least they're safe now.they're beautiful creatures.hope those fuckers are dead.i hate poachers in case no one knows.
here you have the squirrel monkey at the small mammals exhibit.and that's what's left of it when the ocelet sprung a surprise attack.no la....it's only chicken.
took a close-range shot of the common iguana in the reptile house.don't think it bothered eating my handphone.it's veggie anyway.the monitor lizard that prowls the mangrove swamps and basically anywhere else. this guy's called the fly river turtle.dunno which idiot named it.sounds like a direct translation from mandarin.
here's 2 red lories and 3 butterflies feeding on nectar in the Fragile Forest exhibit.perfect for a close-up.notice how people are like animals.when they're eating, they don't give a fuck what's happening around them.
this whistling wood duck just stopped in the middle of the path to quench its thirst.and i was laughing like crazy when i saw it.anyway i found another 3 ducks in the bushes.they sure don't care about strangers.
the ring-tailed lemur was prancing around the raised platform.think it was hungry.anyway it reminds me of that Ali G lemur in Madagascar."I like to move it move it."classic.anyway can you spot the two-toed sloth in the picture on the left?
Moving on to Wild Africa.
in case you can't see these are lions.the male was roaring away at another one at the back of the enclosure that you can't really see.And there's this air-coned shelter with a glass front for viewing the lions nearby.dunno why these lions need special treatment.maybe they're not called King of the animals for nothing.
shit, which one leopard which one jaguar?see already also blur.check out the spot patterns.

Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2005
After months of training for the half marathon, the day finally came. The injuries, the distance breakthroughs and the disappointments all in the back of my mind,I was already planning my run the moment i woke up at the unearthly hour of 3.45am.That's usually the time i wake up to watch my beloved Man Utd play the Champions League.
A breakfast of 2 Snickers bars and a hot cup of Milo wasn't really the perfect way to start the day.I'd rather be having my Casuarina roti prata.A short walk to the Bishan Stadium for my bus ride to the Padang was peppered with my terrible singing to perk myself up.And it was a bummer to discover that Haojie was late and i had to stand on the bus while everyone else had a seat.
And when the bus reached the Padang,i decided to wait for Haojie outside the Adelphi carpark.with absolutely no form of entertainment whatsoever (apart from the occasional chiobu),i did my warm-up outside the carpark. And it's surprising that so many people actually love torturing themselves by running themselves to the ground.21,000 of them today.Even kids leh.
And so the serial latecomer finally arrived and so we made our way to the baggage deposit tent.Little did we know we would be experiencing Hell after the run at this very spot. But that's another story altogether. After another round of warm-up,we made our way into the starting pens.
Ang mohs, old men, young and fit men(me included),middle-aged balding men with their beer bellies, housewives who look fitter than the young men, ladies in their designer sports togs.Everyone was there. So i spent the next 10 minutes people-watching(or rather looking for pretty faces to while away the time).
"3.....2......1......GO!"
And the horses charge out of their stables and head for the finishing line.Neigh.
The first 2 km were along the Esplanade Bridge and Raffles Quay, and this reminded me of how me and my army buddies fooled around here during the Army Half Marathon last year.Weaving through the crowd was quite fun but proved inefficient and deadly. So hj and me jogged at a comfortable pace without any plans to overtake anyone.Saw some Hwachong canoeing girls(dunno which batch).Brought me back to the good old days when the guys team were training together.
After turning into Marina Bay,the other runners were still in good form so we didn't make much progress through the crowd. There was a lady in a red singlet who was running quite well, and i thought why not make her a running target and try not to lag behind her.And so my battle with her began.
And it ended rather soon.At around the 8 km mark, she started to pull ahead as my legs began to ache a bit.My stride was shortened and i cursed at myself as she went out of sight.By the 11 km mark,hj was ahead of me by about 10m but i thought it was ok and just maintained a good pace so as not to lose him.
The Shenton way stretch proved to be my Waterloo, as the morning sun beat down on all our shoulders and when i saw volunteers handing out bananas to the runners in the opposite lane,i went bananas.I was desperate for some fuel yet it was 6km away.I was losing my mental battle.
I could see hj in front but he was pulling away.As i struggled to keep up with him,he didn't show any signs of fatigue and so disappeared in the sea of runners. So i was left to run my own race, and it didn't affect me a little bit.I was used to running alone anyway.
Turning into Nicole Highway was like turning into the Highway to Hell. The slight ascent nearly killed me,and the temptation to walk was immense as there were many of the runners ahead doing so.I grit my teeth and hung on,until my legs could take me no further. After 15km,I had to walk.
Now at this point,i was let down by my lack of stamina and endurance.Although the furthest i ran in training was 12km,my goal was not to stop during the course of the half-marathon.And it was dashed.
So i walked alongside some runners, and was opening up my strides so that i could overtake some of them.Nearing the U-turn point,i saw hj running by.it wasn't so much of a morale-killer but knowing that your running partner is in front of you by almost 400m isn't very encouraging to someone whose hamstrings and calves are threatening to cramp.
The decision to adopt the run-walk approach brought me a little closer to the finishing line, but i was walking more than i liked.the muscles were tightening up and i had no choice but to walk to the side and stretch them before continuing. After about 10 minutes(i lost all concept of time and this should be inaccurate),i saw hj walking in front of me.he had a bad cramp.
brother-in-arms help each other and we walked till we saw the banana station.i took one bite of the banana.
"Wah,zhe ge banana hen hao chi leh."
Indeed, it was the best banana i've tasted.there wasn't any label on it but i think it was del monte, because it's the only brand i know.
we were 1 km from the finishing point and was doing the walk-run-cramp method when hj couldn't even walk before we turned into Anderson Bridge.Medics came and asked about his condition. At that instance i wanted to say, "I can't carry it for you,but i can carry you!"(think sam and frodo).but my legs protested and threatened to cramp up if i did so,so i shut my trap.
We walked up towards the Supreme court, and with 200 or so meters to go,hj said "We'll sprint after the traffic light."And my simple reply was "Anything lor."
So I ran like i never ran before, like the final leg of a 2.4km and as i turned back to see where hj was he was grimacing in pain but still running behind me.I grabbed his hand and pulled him alongside me and we crossed the finishing line, looking like a blind runner and his guide.
I would very much like to collapse in front of the finishing line, but the prospects of encountering a stampede of homosapiens were as good as me being hauled over the barricades by Security. So we went to a corner and sat down, panting like dogs.
2 H2Os,half a bottle of mineral water later,we returned our Championchip and received our medal of completion. When i got mine,it was like getting the One Ring.so precious.
After having a good cooldown(totally forgot about the massage, which i found out on my way to City Hall Mrt that there were hot volunteers doing it),we queued up for our bags.Imagine half the length of the Padang.Yes,that was how horribly long the queue was.And it was 10am.Now imagine the late morning sun shooting arrows at you.that was how bad the heat was.but it was a moment i couldn't miss to tan.
And you'd never expect that the baggage retrieval system was the lousiest part of the whole event.the volunteers were shouting out numbers of the baggage tags for the runners to collect.I had no idea what i was queueing for.but knowing that rushing up to wait for my bag would spark off a frenzy,no choice la,wait lor.
This little lady behind me screamed "HEEEERREEEE!!!!" when she heard her number and scared the hell out of me.it was worse than someone tapping your shoulder in an empty room.
"777!!!!777!!!!"
"Here!!!!!"(notice that mine was softer.)
got my bag and left, waiting for hj to collect his.
The legs were tight by then, but what little energy i had left was meant to get to the mrt and to eat my lunch,so the 2nd stretching had to be done at home.
Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2005.You made my knees hurt and my legs wobbly,my backs ache and my mind a blank. But you made me a man with a new experience.
I shall decide whether or not to join next year.
Enjoy your run people, life doesn't get much better than this, and i believe, sex.
Jensen.

GO TEAM SINGAPORE!
I watched Young Nicole Tay take a tumble from the balance beam after clinching a silver in the uneven bars moments earlier.
I thought, 'since you're the favourite, this fall won't stop you from getting a medal,be it gold, silver or bronze.'
But the agony and grimace on her face betrayed it all.She was in pain after striking the beam in the ankle heavily.she got back up and continued her routine.Another leap ended in failure and she was on the floor again.
this time,it was clear and undeniable that she won't be stepping onto the podium.
this did not stop the determined girl from climbing back onto the beam and finish her sequence.neither did it stop disaster from happening.
she fell for the third time.
she almost cried out.you know how it looks like when people try their best not to cry?
Nicole continued the routine when anyone else would have given up hope.
After her descent and turning to her coach, she finally broke down.
My heart sank.but i rooted for her.
her twin sister Tabitha Tay managed better and won the silver medal, probably out of expectations.and i think she did so for her sister.
five minutes later,Nicole was scheduled for her floor gymnastics competition.
she danced like a fair lady in a vast field of beautiful blooms, she flipped and somersaulted with such grace.and she smiled so radiantly that you forgot she just hurt her ankle and back.
and she was rewarded with the top honours.
i applaud this 14-year-old gymnast for her courage and will to carry on.she did not let her failure in the beam get into her head.she picked herself up and performed exceptionally in the floor, the event she considered her weakest.
that's something we can learn from this yound lass.
and so i shall run on sunday when my body tells me to walk.i will remember this lesson that Nicole has taught me.
And Lee Wen Si the gymnastics team captain, she's a hottie.
